Spring has sprung and I bet all of you are just dying to hang out on your front porch. I recently had a request to help a friend solve a design issue for her teeny tiny front porch that she wants to know how to decorate! Here are some tips that work for porches of all sizes.
1. Dainty Lights
Yeah, I'm talkin' twinkle lights; the goal is to create a soft glow ambiance. A few different ways to achieve this could be to hang them vertically in strands off to one side of your porch, against the house as a backdrop, and of course, on the ceiling. My favorite shown here uses an old ladder to hang twigs and string lights. No need to go crazy with the amount of lights, just enough to create that soft glow to light up the space for nighttime lounging. Another solution with lighting could be a fixture update, some rad sconces on either side of your door or a simple ceiling fan and light combo.
2. Greenery, Duh.
Now, I don't have a green thumb, but I will ALWAYS recommend plants for indoor and outdoor spaces (and if you read my blogs you'll see a common theme here)! With that being said, this is an area for you to get creative- hanging plants, cool mid-century planters on display at the front of your porch, or oversized plants from your garden spilling onto the steps. If your porch is one of those that falls under the "teeny tiny" category, remember that hanging plants are a great option, or to select a few of your favorites and position them with purpose like framing your steps or door. 3. Create a Cozy Space
These pieces pictured above from CB2 are really great outdoor options and can work for spaces of all sizes. Pair two of these bistro chairs with a small round table for morning coffee, or hang one of these awesome outdoor swing seats in a corner for a loungey nook (perfect for reading). Let me make a wild statement here: pillows. No matter the square footage of your porch, I guarantee you can create a cozy environment using a rocking chair you already have topped off with a couple pillows. I find that a space really feels enticing if the pillows look comfy, just don't forget to shop for pillows in the outdoor section for that weather-resistant fabric. Whether its a hammock, a chair swing, or a pair of rocking chairs, choose what fits your space and needs!
4. Edit and Refine
You may want to try all of these tips, but sometimes all your porch needs is LESS. If your style is minimalist, skip the overgrown greenery and instead place with purpose two of your favorite potted plants on either side of your door to highlight this focal point. Have fun with the planters- depending on your style, something textured and rustic could compliment an otherwise simple entrance, or maybe super sleek, modern black planters speak to your heart. The idea is to create something that is not only attractive, but also aligns with your personal style.
